U.S. and Canada Break off Trade Talks as 50% Tariffs Take Effect

WASHINGTON–OTTAWA, August 22. /Dunyo IA/. Trade negotiations between the United States and Canada ended without an agreement. Both countries entered the day with new tariffs in place, including 50% U.S. tariffs on a wide range of Canadian goods, reports Dunyo IA correspondent, citing “Axios.”

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the suspension of negotiations, describing the last-minute changes made by Washington to the proposed deal as “unfair” and “uneconomic.”

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, meanwhile, said Canada had refused to finalize the agreement on previously agreed terms, putting forward new demands and backing away from several commitments.

The new U.S. tariffs apply, among other goods, to wine, dairy products, cement, clothing and hockey equipment. Key Canadian exports, including energy products, potash and critical minerals, are exempt from the new tariffs.

In response, Mark Carney pledged to impose tariffs on U.S. goods “dollar for dollar.”

The two sides had previously discussed reducing U.S. tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum from 50% to 25%, and on automobiles from 25% to 15%. The negotiations had continued for more than a year amid President Donald Trump’s trade policies.

Trade between the U.S. and Canada totalled $376 billion in the first half of the year, making Canada the United States’ second-largest trading partner after Mexico, with which Washington will also hold trade negotiations.
