BAGHDAD, September 28. /Dunyo IA/. Baghdad has announced the complete withdrawal of US forces from Iraq, reports Dunyo IA correspondent, citing “DW News.”

According to the Iraqi government, all US combat units and logistical support forces have left the country. Washington had not officially confirmed the information at the time of publication.

The United States and Iraq agreed on the withdrawal of U.S. forces in 2024. In recent years, around 2,500 U.S. troops had been stationed in the country.

The last U.S. units were based in Erbil, at a military facility near Baghdad International Airport, and in the “Green Zone,” the government district of the capital.

Since 2014, the United States and its allies have conducted operations against the terrorist organization Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. Despite the group’s territorial defeat, individual cells continue to operate in the region.

Against the backdrop of the U.S. withdrawal, events are being held across Iraq on September 28, which are being referred to as “Independence Day.” Government institutions are expected to be closed on the day.

The future of Iran-linked armed groups in Iraq also remains an issue. Their disarmament and integration into the state security forces had been planned following the withdrawal of U.S. troops.

However, Iraq’s new Prime Minister Ali al-Zeidi announced that these measures would be postponed until June 2027.

It is worth recalling that in mid-July, U.S. President Donald Trump said that American troops would completely leave Iraq by September 30 during a meeting with Iraq’s new prime minister at the White House.
