ISLAMABAD, October 13. /Dunyo IA/. Pakistan’s “Global News Pakistan” Information Agency has published an article entitled “Water Security in the Turkic World: Shared Interests and Common Solutions”, focusing on the development of cooperation in water resources management within the framework of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS), reports Dunyo IA correspondent.
Article’s author, Minister of Water Resources of Uzbekistan Shavkat Khamraev, notes that a number of practical initiatives are already being implemented within the Organization. In May 2024, the OTS, jointly with Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of Türkiye, held a seminar on the effective use of water. Experts from member and observer states exchanged experience in irrigation management under changing climatic conditions, water conservation during droughts and the application of modern agricultural technologies.
OTS Drought Prevention Institute, based in Budapest, plays an important role in strengthening cooperation. Its activities focus on promoting collaboration in water resources management, irrigation, drought prevention and addressing environmental challenges.
Article also highlights a meeting held on June 18th at Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Water Resources with Balázs Hendrich, Executive Director of the Representation Office of the Organization of Turkic States in Hungary and Chairman of the Board of the OTS Drought Prevention Institute. Another significant milestone was the OTS Regional Water Forum, held in Brussels on March 5th, 2025, which addressed sustainable water resources management, modern water technologies, investment in green growth and strengthening resilience to drought.
According to the author, cooperation in the water sector is gradually moving beyond discussions of common challenges towards scientific, institutional and practical collaboration. The next task is to consolidate the progress achieved through systematic mechanisms focused on tangible results.
Article also gives particular attention to the initiatives put forward by the President of Uzbekistan to promote the rational use of water resources across the OTS region. Speaking at the Organization’s informal summit in Turkistan on May 15th, Head of State emphasized the need for early drought detection, systematic monitoring of soil erosion and glacier melting, and the widespread application of artificial intelligence in transboundary water resources management.
As the article notes, these proposals open up new opportunities to substantially deepen cooperation among the countries of the region in the field of water security.
In conclusion, the author emphasized the importance of the shared cultural values of the Turkic peoples, rooted in a respectful attitude towards water. In his view, implementing joint public awareness and educational initiatives within the OTS under the motto “Water Conservation Is a Shared Value” would help bring the peoples closer together and foster a stronger sense of responsibility for water resources.
