DELHI-ISLAMABAD-KABUL, July 23. /Dunyo IA/. At least 82 people have died as a result of heavy rains and flooding in north-eastern India, Pakistan and Afghanistan, reports Dunyo IA correspondent.

According to Reuters, the disaster has caused extensive damage to farmland, infrastructure and public facilities.

Over the past 24 hours, at least 10 people have been killed in floods in India’s north-eastern state of Assam. According to authorities, the total death toll in the state over the past week has reached 36. The state administration described the situation as “unprecedented devastation.”

According to a bulletin from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority published on Wednesday, heavy rainfall has affected more than 650,000 people across 11 districts of the state.

A report by the Assam government said the floods were primarily caused by extremely heavy rainfall in the neighbouring state of Nagaland between July 18 and 20, which led to unusually high river flows.

Assam, home to the Brahmaputra River, one of the world’s largest rivers, experiences flooding almost every year during the monsoon season.

Over the past 72 hours, at least 46 people have been killed and more than 100 injured in floods in Afghanistan’s north-eastern province of Nuristan and Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, according to disaster management authorities in both countries.

Experts note that despite their relatively small contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions, Afghanistan and Pakistan are among the countries most vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Increasing floods, droughts, glacier melt and water shortages pose a threat to millions of people.
