PARIS, November 5. /Dunyo IA/.  UNESCO has approved the establishment of the UNESCO Chair on “Teaching and Learning Artificial Intelligence in Education” at the International Nordic University in Tashkent, reports Dunyo IA correspondent.

Activities of the new Chair will mark a significant step in developing international cooperation between Uzbekistan and UNESCO in the field of higher education, scientific research, and the integration of AI technologies into the educational process.

Creation of the Chair aligns with the priorities of the state policy of Uzbekistan in the field of artificial intelligence development, digital transformation and the training of qualified personnel in advanced technological fields, as outlined by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. In particular, this initiative corresponds to the provisions of the Strategy for the Development of Artificial Intelligence Technologies until 2030, which provides for the development of human resources potential, advanced training of educators and the expansion of the application of AI technologies.

Primary goal of the Chair will be the development of research and practical approaches to the responsible, ethical and effective application of AI in higher education, taking into account the specific characteristics and needs of Central Asian countries.

Activities of the Chair will be carried out within the framework of the UNESCO UNITWIN Programme, which brings together UNESCO Chairs and university networks across the globe, aimed at strengthening international academic cooperation, advancing scientific research and facilitating knowledge exchange.

This UNESCO Chair will become the ninth in Uzbekistan and will contribute to the further expansion of national universities' participation in international academic networks and UNESCO programs.

Among the priority areas of its activities are the study of the implementation and regulation of AI in the educational sphere, development of methodological recommendations and tools for its integration into teaching and learning, advanced training and development of digital competencies among faculty and heads of educational institutions, as well as the expansion of international scientific cooperation and the exchange of best practices.

Establishment of the Chair will make a significant contribution to strengthening Uzbekistan’s position in the international educational and research space. It will create additional opportunities for attracting foreign experts, implementing joint research projects, developing modern educational approaches and forming a regional expert platform on the application of AI in higher education.

Creation of this Chair marks another milestone in the development of cooperation between Uzbekistan and UNESCO in the field of artificial intelligence. On October 22nd, 2024, at the initiative of the President of Uzbekistan, “UNESCO-Uzbekistan Al-Biruni International Prize for Research in the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence” was established.

This prestigious award became the world's first global initiative aimed at supporting scientific research in the field of AI ethics. The historic first award ceremony took place in November 2025 in Samarkand within the framework of the 43rd session of the UNESCO General Conference. The awards were presented to outstanding projects from France, Brazil and the PRC that promote ethical, inclusive, and responsible technologies of the future.
