Uzbekistan presents its experience at UN event on the rights of older women

NEW YORK, March 27. /Dunyo IA/. The delegation of Uzbekistan took an active part in the United Nations high-level ministerial roundtable discussion on “Achieving Gender Equality and Empowering All Older Women,” held in New York, reports Dunyo IA correspondent.

The delegation included member of the Senate of Oliy Majlis Gulnara Marufova, Deputy Chairperson of the Supreme Court Malika Kalandarova, Deputy Chairperson of the Committee on Family and Women Mukarram Nurmatova, and Deputy Director of the National Center for Human Rights Dilnoza Muratova.

The event served as an important platform for discussing global approaches to protecting the rights of older women and promoting fair social and legal policies.

During the discussions, participants addressed key challenges faced by older women, including age-based discrimination and limited access to healthcare, social services, and justice. Particular attention was given to the need to integrate a gender-responsive approach into social protection and pension systems.

A presentation was delivered by Mukarram Nurmatova, Deputy Chairperson of the Committee on Family and Women of Uzbekistan, who provided detailed information on the country’s comprehensive measures to support older women. She highlighted Uzbekistan’s efforts to strengthen the legal and institutional frameworks of social protection, ensure adequate pension provision, and expand opportunities for older women to participate in social and economic life.

The Uzbek delegation also shared national practices and initiatives aimed at removing barriers faced by older women, and explored successful international experiences with a view to their possible adaptation at the national level.

Uzbekistan’s participation in the event reflects the country’s commitment to advancing a comprehensive policy for the protection of women’s rights at all ages, strengthening the social and economic status of older women, and actively engaging in the exchange of experience and best practices at the international level.

The ministerial meeting reaffirmed that ensuring the rights of older women is not only a matter of social justice, but also a strategic component of sustainable development and overall societal well-being.
