AARHUS, April 22. /Dunyo IA/. An exhibition titled "Handwoven Art – Uzbek Abrbandi (Ikat)" is currently being held in the Danish city of Aarhus, reports Dunyo IA correspondent.
The exhibition, which runs from April 3 to 30, is organized by the Association of Uzbek Initiatives, an organization of Uzbek nationals in Denmark. The exhibition features photographs, textiles, and visual aids that showcase the traditional Uzbek weaving craft, focusing on the art of abrbandi – the process of transforming silk cocoons and cotton threads into finished fabrics.
In an interview with Dunyo IA, the project’s author and head of the Association of Uzbek Initiatives, Marifat Akbarova, explained that after participating in the traditional international Atlas Bayrami festival in Margilan last August, she decided to open a permanent exhibition of Uzbek textiles in Denmark.
As part of the event, a creative workshop titled "Painting, Inspired by Adras Patterns" was conducted by designer and seamstress Zulfizar Akhmedova.
"This beautiful exhibition, demonstrating the process of transforming silk cocoons into finished fabric, is truly touching. We were deeply fascinated by the history of this fabric, its near disappearance, and how it was revived after Uzbekistan gained independence and is now valued worldwide. This art, without a doubt, is one of the symbols of the richness of Uzbek culture", - said exhibition visitor Aske Yervin.
"Visitors can not only admire the stunning fabrics but also learn about the entire weaving process – how silk and cotton threads are prepared for weaving, and the artistry and traditions behind this craft. The tradition of weaving has been included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list. We are happy to host this exhibition dedicated to the art of Uzbek weaving", said a staff member of the Hellerup Library in Aarhus.
