Uzbekistan plans to begin Construction of Two Large Nuclear Power Units in 2027

LONDON, October 27. /Dunyo IA/.   Construction of two large nuclear power units, each with a capacity of 1,000 MW, is planned to begin in 2027 in Uzbekistan’s Jizzakh region, alongside the implementation of the small modular reactor project, reports Dunyo IA correspondent, citing with the British publication “World Nuclear News”.

Construction of two small modular reactors (SMRs) is already under way at the site of the planned nuclear power plant. In May 2026, the first concrete was poured for the foundation slab, with work scheduled for completion by the end of the year.

According to “Rosatom”, two 1,000 MW units equipped with VVER-1000 reactors will be located alongside the smaller reactors. Engineering surveys and design refinements are currently under way at the site.

Publication quotes “Rosatom” CEO Alexey Likhachev as describing the project as the only small nuclear power plant in the world currently being implemented under an export model.

More than 1,000 people are currently working at the construction site. The workforce is expected to at least double in the coming months, while a significant share of general construction work is to be contracted to Uzbek companies.

Meanwhile, long-lead equipment is being manufactured. The reactor vessel for one of the small reactor units has already been completed, and recruitment of operating personnel for the first small modular reactor (SMR) unit is scheduled to begin by the end of 2027.

A “nuclear city” designed to accommodate 33,000 residents in its first phase is also planned near the plant. The project envisages energy-efficient housing and educational, healthcare and sports facilities.

Portal reports that training qualified specialists for the nuclear energy sector and cooperation on residential construction were discussed during a meeting between President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev and the Head of “Rosatom”.
