KATHMANDU, August 27. /Dunyo IA/. Nearly 1,500 people, including more than 700 foreign nationals, have been reported missing following catastrophic floods in Nepal and Tibet, reports Dunyo IA correspondent, citing “Reuters”.

As massive flows of mud and rocks surged into a Himalayan river, torrents of water and debris swept away roads, homes and infrastructure. At least 165 people have died in Nepal, although local authorities expect the death toll to rise.

A total of 826 people are reported missing in Nepal, including nearly 500 foreign nationals. Among the tourists and pilgrims missing are 177 Indian citizens, 63 from the United States, 34 from Australia, 33 from the United Kingdom and 25 from Canada. In Tibet’s Gyirong County, 558 people are reported missing, including 260 foreign nationals. Chinese authorities have reported three fatalities.

More than 5,000 military personnel and police officers are taking part in search-and-rescue operations. Today, rescuers located and evacuated 125 people, including 20 foreign nationals. Tents, food and other essential supplies are being delivered to the affected areas. Rescue efforts are being hampered by the threat of further mudflows and flooding, as well as forecasts of additional rainfall. Among those missing are pilgrims traveling to Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar, sacred sites for Hindus and Buddhists.

According to the Embassy of Uzbekistan in New Delhi, which also covers Nepal, no information has so far been received regarding Uzbek nationals among those killed or affected by the disaster. The diplomatic mission remains in close contact with the relevant authorities and continues to closely monitor developments.
