WASHINGTON, August 22. /Dunyo IA/. The U.S. administration has notified Congress of its intention to provide the United Nations with 725 million dollars to fund the organization’s regular budget, reports Dunyo IA correspondent, citing Reuters.
The funds have not yet been transferred. The U.S. State Department said their release would depend on continued reforms and spending cuts at the United Nations.
According to UN data, U.S. arrears exceeded 4 billion dollars in May, including 2.04 billion for the regular budget and 2.2 billion for peacekeeping operations. The United States is the largest contributor to the UN system.
Amid the organization’s financial crisis, the UN has already cut its 2026 budget by 9.2% and relocated more than 2,000 jobs from expensive cities, including New York and Geneva, to lower-cost hubs.
Experts estimate that the planned payment will temporarily ease financial pressure on the UN but will not fully resolve the issue of the United States’ accumulated debt.
