Belarus conducts trials on Uzbek Garlic Variety Sourced from Andijan Region

VITEBSK, October 22. /Dunyo IA/.  In the Vitebsk Region of Belarus, an Uzbek winter garlic variety “Krasny Maysky” (Red May) has been planted on 2.5 hectares of land to evaluate its yield potential and adaptation to local climatic conditions, reports Dunyo IA correspondent.

Experiment is being conducted at the "Olgovskoye" production cooperative in the Vitebsk District. The most fertile plots with light soil were selected for planting, and Uzbek agronomists have been involved to work alongside Belarusian specialists to monitor the process and adjust technological parameters.

Planting is carried out mechanically using a specialized seedier manufactured by the “Tekhmash” joint venture from the Andijan Region. To determine the most effective cultivation technology, specialists are comparing two crop allocation schemes – a two-row system with 75-centimeter row spacing and a three-row system with 40-centimeter row spacing.

According to Olga Yakovleva, Chief Agronomist of the “Olgovskoye” cooperative, the condition of the plants will be kept under continuous monitoring. The first harvest of the Uzbek variety is scheduled to be gathered in July 2027. Within the same season, the planting of Uzbek garlic is also planned to be carried out on the fields of the L.Dovator State College of Ullo.

Experiment marks another stage in the development of agricultural cooperation between Belarus and Uzbekistan, specifically between the Vitebsk and Andijan regions. Previously, it was reported that 2,000 hectares of land in the Vitebsk Region had been allocated to Uzbek farmers for potato cultivation, alongside the launch of joint ventures in animal husbandry.

Results of the trials will allow for an assessment of the prospects of cultivating Uzbek garlic under Belarusian conditions and help determine the most suitable production technologies.
