Uzbekistan and Pakistan Discuss New Transit Opportunities for Bilateral Trade

ISLAMABAD, November 8. /Dunyo IA/. Uzbekistan’s Ambassador Alisher Tukhtaev held a meeting with Sajid Amin, Director General of Pakistan’s Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC), reports a Dunyo IA correspondent.

The meeting was attended by representatives of Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, SIFC officials responsible for investment and industrial projects, and heads of other relevant organizations.

The participants discussed ways to expand bilateral trade, economic and investment ties between Uzbekistan and Pakistan, address existing transport and logistics challenges, and implement joint investment projects.

Particular attention was paid to the sharp decline in bilateral trade following the closure of the traditional transport corridor between the two countries, as well as possible ways to resolve this issue.

An initiative was put forward to establish a dedicated trade and transit corridor from Peshawar in Pakistan, through the Torkham border crossing and across Afghanistan, to Termez in Uzbekistan. Transportation along this route would be conducted under special monitoring and control arrangements.

To discuss the proposal in practical terms, it was suggested that online negotiations be held with the participation of Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Investment, Industry and Trade and Ministry of Transport, as well as the relevant agencies of Pakistan.

The Pakistani side explained that the current restrictions were related to the security situation and described Uzbekistan’s proposal to establish a dedicated transit corridor as a practically viable initiative.

The meeting also addressed the possibility of involving major Pakistani construction companies in the New Tashkent project and ensuring the participation of Pakistani business representatives in the international business forum “New Uzbekistan: At the Crossroads of Global Markets”, scheduled to take place in Tashkent later this year.

The SIFC leadership supported these initiatives and pledged practical assistance in attracting financially sound and reliable Pakistani companies to the New Tashkent project and securing their participation in the business forum.

The parties also discussed the establishment of production and logistics facilities by Uzbek companies in Pakistan, as well as the participation of an Uzbek delegation in FoodAg–2026, an international food and agriculture exhibition scheduled to take place in Karachi.

Special attention was also given to strengthening ties between the central banks of the two countries and attracting Pakistani airlines to launch regular flights to Tashkent, Samarkand, and Bukhara.
