Times Kuwait: Khorezm – the cultural jewel of Central Asia

KUWAIT CITY, December 21. /Dunyo IA/. The popular English-language weekly Times Kuwait has published an article highlighting the tourism and cultural potential of Khorezm Region in Uzbekistan, one of the oldest regions of Central Asia, located along the lower reaches of the Amu Darya, Dunyo IA correspondent.
The article notes that Khorezm, historically situated at the crossroads of the Great Silk Road, has played a key role in shaping regional civilization for centuries. Today, the region attracts international tourists with its preserved historical heritage, UNESCO World Heritage sites, and the active development of modern tourism infrastructure.
A central focus of the article is Khiva and its historic core, Ichan-Kala, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The publication emphasizes that Ichan-Kala is among the best-preserved medieval cities in the world. The area contains over 50 architectural monuments, including the Kalta Minor Minaret, Kunya-Ark Fortress, Islam Khodja Minaret, and Juma Mosque with its unique carved wooden columns.
Special attention is given to Nurullaboy Palace, built in the early 20th century as the residence of the Khivan khans. Times Kuwait notes that the palace’s architecture combines Eastern traditions with elements of European palace style, reflecting the cultural and political transformations of the region at the turn of the century.
The article also highlights Khorezm’s culinary heritage. The region is known for traditional dishes such as shivit oshi, tuxum barak, and gumma, as well as breads baked in clay ovens. Khorezm’s fruit and melon cultivation is particularly celebrated, with its melons long regarded as among the finest in Central Asia, often referred to as the “nectar of the Silk Road.”
Khorezm’s vibrant festival scene is also noted, including the International Silk Road Festival in Khiva and the annual Melon Festival (Qovun sayli), featuring folk dances, musical performances, handicraft fairs, and culinary events.
According to Times Kuwait, Khorezm is actively modernizing its tourism infrastructure while preserving the authenticity of its cultural heritage. Today, the region represents a harmonious blend of ancient history, living traditions, and modern tourist standards, making it one of the most attractive destinations in Central Asia for international travelers.
