TASHKENT, December 12. /DUNYO IA/. Today, University of World Economy and Diplomacy (UWED) hosted the official opening ceremony of its traditional Model United Nations event - UWED MUN, reports Dunyo IA correspondent.

The event brought together distinguished guests, professors, faculty members, and graduate students of the University of World Economy and Diplomacy.

The opening ceremony was inaugurated by Sodiq Safoev, First Deputy Chairman of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan and Rector of UWED. In his address, he highlighted the vital role of youth in contemporary diplomatic processes, emphasizing their contribution to addressing global challenges and the responsibilities of Uzbekistan’s new generation on the international stage.

Welcoming remarks were also delivered by representatives of international organizations and the diplomatic corps, including Won Do-yeon, South Korean Ambassador, Regina Maria Castillo, Representative of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in Uzbekistan and Toivo Klaar, Ambassador of the European Union to Uzbekistan. They underscored the importance of engaging youth in tackling global issues, including climate change, human rights protection, sustainable development goals, and the promotion of international peace. Continuing the ceremony, Laziz Karaev, Head of the Department for Cooperation with the UN and Other International Organizations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, delivered a report on Uzbekistan’s relations with the United Nations. He highlighted the 43rd UNESCO General Conference, held in Samarkand, as a significant milestone in the country’s diplomatic achievements.

The organizers of UWED MUN emphasized that active youth participation in global processes, their creativity, and responsible engagement are among the most important driving forces behind modern international cooperation. Delegates were encouraged to pursue constructive dialogue, foster solidarity, and develop practical solutions to strengthen international partnerships.

As part of the cultural program, participants visited an exhibition showcasing student artworks, traditional dances, and other creative projects.

The UWED Model UN Conference has been held annually since 2005 and this year not only marks the 20th anniversary of the UWED MUN Club but is also dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the United Nations. The event brought together 350 delegates from more than ten leading universities and lyceums across the country. The conference focused on exploring how youth perspectives can contribute to shaping global governance, moving beyond dialogue toward practical engagement on contemporary international challenges.

This framing reflects the emphasis on youth participation in international decision‑making highlighted by official United Nations and multilateral youth forums.
