A View from India: Extended Meeting Chaired by the President of Uzbekistan Marks a Turning Point for the Country’s Diplomatic Corps

DELHI, January 19. /«Dunyo» IA/. Dr. Pravesh Kumar Gupta, Research Fellow at India’s Vivekananda International Foundation, shared his assessment with «Dunyo» IA regarding the outcomes of the meeting held on January 15 under the chairmanship of the President of Uzbekistan, focusing on the activities of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the country’s diplomatic missions abroad:

- The video conference chaired by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev on January 15 represented a turning point for Uzbekistan’s diplomatic corps. Amid escalating global geopolitical tensions and threats to regional and domestic reforms, the country has initiated a critical reassessment and reorientation of its foreign policy.

Emphasizing the need to update the Concept of Foreign Policy, strengthen economic diplomacy, and achieve concrete results in areas such as exports, investments, tourism, and legal labor migration, the President presented a pragmatic “roadmap.” This plan fully aligns with the national interests of Uzbekistan in the context of growing instability on the international stage.

From India’s perspective, this initiative resonates strongly, given the shared commitment to multilateralism and regional stability in Central Asia. Uzbekistan’s focus on actively protecting its citizens abroad—through enhanced legal support and proactive consular assistance—addresses a critical gap, particularly in the context of migration challenges in regions such as Europe and the Middle East.

The directive requiring ambassadors to achieve measurable results—for instance, doubling exports to key markets or negotiating seasonal worker visa agreements with the United States—highlights the shift toward results-oriented diplomacy. Such an approach could serve as a model for similar reforms in other developing economies.

Moreover, the meeting’s emphasis on adapting to global transformations—including economic shifts and regional confrontations—positions Uzbekistan as a proactive actor in platforms such as the UN and the “Central Asia Plus” dialogue formats. This approach can strengthen ties with partners such as India, where Uzbekistan’s strategic objectives align with opportunities in green energy, digital transformation, and infrastructure development.

Overall, these directives not only enhance Uzbekistan’s international standing but also lay the groundwork for sustainable development, fostering optimism for the deepening of bilateral and multilateral cooperation in the coming years.
