CARACAS, July 19. /Dunyo IA/. The death toll from two powerful earthquakes that struck Venezuela's Caribbean coast last month has risen to 5,119, reports Dunyo IA correspondent, citing Bloomberg.

Jorge Rodríguez, Speaker of Venezuela’s National Assembly (parliament), said that 16,740 people have been injured in the disaster. The number of fatalities continues to climb as rescue teams clear collapsed buildings and gain access to previously isolated areas.

The earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, struck on June 24, just one minute apart. The quakes caused widespread destruction in La Guaira state, north of Caracas, home to Venezuela’s main international airport, a major seaport, and hundreds of apartment buildings, many of which were partially or completely destroyed.

According to government officials, more than 1,300 aftershocks have been recorded since the main earthquakes. Around 20,000 people remain displaced, with many staying in overcrowded shelters that lack reliable access to clean water and adequate sanitation.
