Iraq Does Not Rule Out Leaving OPEC Amid Dispute Over Oil Production Quotas

BAGHDAD, June 25. /Dunyo IA/. Iraq is considering all possible options, including a potential withdrawal from OPEC, if its oil production quota is not significantly increased, reports Dunyo IA correspondent, citing Reuters.

According to sources, Iraq, OPEC’s second-largest oil producer, believes that the current production restrictions are disproportionate to its economic needs and production capacity.

Sources told the agency that the issue of increasing quotas has become particularly sensitive amid the country's financial difficulties, which have been exacerbated by the consequences of regional conflicts and disruptions to oil supplies.

A spokesperson for Iraq’s Ministry of Oil stated that Baghdad had indeed considered the possibility of leaving the organization in the past. However, the current priority remains maintaining OPEC membership while continuing efforts to secure a higher production quota.

“Saudi Arabia and other OPEC allies should treat this matter with the utmost seriousness. Failing that, Iraq will be compelled to consider all available options,” the spokesperson said, emphasizing that “it’s still premature for this step.”

The Iraqi government stated that the country is working to restore its export capacity and plans to increase oil production to 7 million barrels per day in the coming years, but declined to comment further on quota negotiations.

It is worth noting that earlier this year, the United Arab Emirates ended its participation in OPEC amid disagreements over production levels, intensifying discussions about stability within the oil cartel.
