BELGRADE, September 15. /Dunyo IA/. President of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić said he would resign as head of state on September 27 and then take part in preparations for the early parliamentary elections as an “ordinary citizen,” reports Dunyo IA correspondent.

“On September 27, I will step down as president,” he said in an interview with “Pink TV.”

He added that after leaving office, he would focus on preparations for the parliamentary elections outside the presidency.

On September 9, Aleksandar Vučić approved the dissolution of the National Assembly, Serbia’s unicameral parliament, and called early elections for October 25.

Miloš Vučević, chairman of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party, said the president would head the party’s list in the upcoming elections and become its candidate for prime minister.

The early elections will take place amid prolonged mass anti-government protests in Serbia, which began after the collapse of a canopy at the railway station Novi Sad in November 2024, killing 16 people.

Aleksandar Vučić served as Serbia’s prime minister from 2014 to 2017. He was elected president in 2017 and re-elected in 2022. His current presidential term is due to expire in May 2027. Under the Serbian Constitution, the president may serve no more than two five-year terms.
