BUDAPEST, July 19. /Dunyo IA/. President of Hungary Tamás Sulyok has signed a constitutional amendment allowing his term in office to be ended early. His presidential mandate was previously scheduled to continue until 2029, reports Dunyo IA correspondent, citing Euronews.

The amendment was initiated by Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar. On July 13, the document was approved by 139 out of 199 members of parliament. Once the changes take effect, Tamás Sulyok’s presidential powers will be terminated.

The president said he disagreed with the content of the amendment, calling it a “shameful historical example of abuse of political power.” However, he said he signed the document because the law remains the foundation of his decision-making.

According to him, the amendment undermines the principles of the separation of powers and the rule of law. Former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán also criticized the decision, saying that such a mechanism could pose a threat to other state institutions.

Péter Magyar previously stated that Tamás Sulyok, who was considered an ally of Viktor Orbán, had lost public trust. Starting Monday, presidential duties will temporarily be assumed by Parliament Speaker Ágnes Forsthoffer. The parliament will later elect a new head of state.
