Donald Trump to Hold Talks with Presidents of Ukraine and Syria at NATO Summit in Ankara

WASHINGTON, July 6. /Dunyo IA/. U.S. President Donald Trump will attend the NATO summit in Ankara, where he is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and Syria’s interim leader Ahmed al-Sharaa, reports Dunyo IA correspondent, citing Anadolu agency.
According to a joint briefing by White House Principal Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly and U.S. Permanent Representative to NATO Matt Whitaker, the American president will also hold a press conference following the talks to summarize the outcomes of his visit to Türkiye.
The main focus of the discussions will be diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the conflict in Ukraine. U.S. administration officials said the continued hostilities are causing “heavy losses and destruction for both sides,” underscoring the need to intensify the peace process.
The parties are expected to discuss possible political and diplomatic mechanisms for resolving the conflict, as well as the overall situation on the front line. Amid the ongoing war, questions of international security guarantees and potential negotiation formats remain central to the dialogue between Kyiv and Washington.
Ahead of the summit, President of Russia Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump held a phone conversation lasting 85 minutes, according to the Kremlin. The discussion reportedly covered the situation in Ukraine and upcoming international meetings in Türkiye.
According to President’s aide Yuri Ushakov, Vladimir Putin congratulated Donald Trump on the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence. The two leaders also discussed prospects for conflict resolution, with Donald Trump reportedly expressing readiness to support efforts aimed at achieving a swift end to hostilities.
The Russian side emphasized the need for a political and diplomatic settlement based on Moscow’s own approaches. It also stressed the importance of maintaining regular contact on military-political and economic issues.
Separately, it was reported that U.S. special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner will continue mediation efforts and are prepared to travel to Moscow if necessary. Earlier, the Kremlin expressed hope for the resumption of mediation efforts by the United States after a long pause.
On the same day, Donald Trump also held a separate phone call with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky. The two leaders discussed developments on the front line and diplomatic efforts aimed at exploring possible pathways toward a settlement.
Ukrainian leader said in a statement that the conversation focused on the current battlefield situation and international initiatives related to potential negotiation formats.
The NATO summit in Ankara will take place on July 7-8 amid a tense international agenda. According to U.S. officials, Washington is simultaneously seeking to strengthen diplomatic efforts to end the conflict while maintaining coordination with allies, as internal alliance discussions continue over defense burden-sharing and the future security strategy for Europe.
