ISLAMABAD, July 31. /Dunyo IA/. Pakistani news agency “Global News Pakistan” has published an article titled “Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan: A New Stage and Prospects for Environmental Cooperation”, reports Dunyo IA correspondent.

Publication notes that the legal foundation of cooperation was laid by an intergovernmental agreement dated December 24^th, 1996. It also highlights that interaction significantly intensified in 2022–2025: the two countries jointly participated in meetings of the Global Snow Leopard and Ecosystem Protection Program (GSLEP) in Bishkek and Cholpon-Ata, a regional seminar on combating illegal wildlife trade, and a training seminar on reports under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. In July 2024, a memorandum on grant-based places at “Green University” was signed and in December of the same year, an event dedicated to International Mountain Day was held there.

Agency recalls the memorandums of 2019 and 2021 on the management of the UNESCO transboundary World Heritage Site “Western Tien-Shan” and the protection of the snow leopard, as well as cooperation within the framework of the CIS, SCO, International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea and with organizations such as “Fauna & Flora International”, GIZ and IUCN.

Among the prospective tasks, publication identifies the involvement of Kyrgyzstan in the Uzbek-Kazakh working group on water quality in the Syrdarya River Basin and the promotion of a regional environmental performance review with the support of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).

In conclusion, the article notes that the environmental partnership between the two states is acquiring a strategic character and is of key importance for the sustainability of Central Asia.
