WASHINGTON–TEHRAN, July 2. /Dunyo IA/. Mediators from Qatar and Pakistan concluded separate meetings with U.S. and Iranian negotiators in Doha, reports Dunyo IA correspondent, citing Al Jazeera.
Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majеd Al-Ansari described the negotiations as showing “positive progress.” According to him, the next round of indirect talks between U.S. and Iranian representatives will take place after the funeral of Iran’s former Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.
Officials in Tehran said the consultations with Washington resulted in an agreement to establish a “communication channel” to notify each side of any violations of the memorandum of understanding and to discuss ways to resolve them.
Sources familiar with the negotiations said representatives of the two countries also discussed maritime shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and the unfreezing of Iranian assets.
U.S. President Donald Trump welcomed the progress achieved during the indirect talks, saying that “very good meetings” had taken place in Doha.
“As far as things are going, the denuclearisation of Iran is moving along well. We hit them [Iran] a very hard... but we’re getting along very well,” the president told reporters.
However, according to the sources, Iran’s nuclear program was not discussed during the talks in Doha, which focused on technical issues. Vice President JD Vance said the nuclear issue would be addressed at a later stage.
As previously reported, Iran is preparing what is expected to be the largest state funeral in its history for former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a U.S.-Israeli airstrike on February 28.
