“Sputnik Georgia”: Over recent years, relations between Uzbekistan and Georgia have acquired a more sustainable economic substance

MOSCOW, July 2. /Dunyo IA/.   Russian news agency, “Sputnik Georgia”, has published an article dedicated to the upcoming state visit of the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev, to Georgia, reports Dunyo IA correspondent.

Publication notes that in recent years, Uzbek–Georgian relations have acquired a more sustainable economic substance. Alongside an active political dialogue, trade, economic and investment cooperation, industrial partnership, as well as the development of transport and logistics connectivity, are gaining increasingly significant importance.

Publication underscores that the official visit of the Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Kobakhidze, to Uzbekistan in March 2025 marked a crucial milestone in the advancement of bilateral engagement. Following the high-level negotiations, the sides reaffirmed their mutual interest in the further expansion of trade and economic ties, the implementation of joint investment and industrial partnership projects, as well as the optimization of transport and logistics infrastructure. Increasing the volume of bilateral trade to 1 billion dollars was identified as a key objective, to be achieved in part through more effective utilization of the potential offered by the existing Free Trade Agreement.

According to the data presented in the article, the trade turnover between Uzbekistan and Georgia tripled during the period from 2017 to 2025, rising from 89 million to 267.6 million dollars. This growth in bilateral trade is driven by the ongoing economic reforms in Uzbekistan, the expansion of industrial manufacturing, and an increase in the export of high-value-added products.

Publication places particular emphasis on the development of transport and logistics cooperation. It notes that Uzbekistan and Georgia occupy a vital position along the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (Middle Corridor), with the volume of Uzbek cargo transit via this route doubling in 2025 to reach 1.2 million tons.

Furthermore, the publication reports on the implementation of a project to construct an Uzbek multifunctional terminal within the Poti Free Industrial Zone. This facility is designed to expand the export capabilities of Uzbek products to European nations and ensure more efficient cargo transhipment between Central Asia and Europe via Georgian ports.

As “Sputnik Georgia” underscores, the upcoming state visit of the President of Uzbekistan to Georgia is envisioned as a crucial milestone in further strengthening the Uzbek–Georgian partnership and injecting additional momentum into the development of mutually beneficial cooperation across a broad spectrum of dimensions.
