WASHINGTON–TEHRAN, August 11. /Dunyo IA/.  Prospects for an agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz have weakened after U.S. President Donald Trump demanded that Iran pay compensation for people killed in wars, attacks and protests, reports Dunyo IA correspondent, citing with “Reuters”.

Tehran had earlier set conditions for a peace agreement, including compensation, the lifting of sanctions and an end to U.S. military threats. These demands largely corresponded to the terms of a preliminary peace deal reached in June, but the agreement later broke down.

“We're going to ask for money for the damage they’ve done over a 50-year period”, Donald Trump said. According to him, the compensation should take into account the deaths of civilian protesters and U.S. military personnel in the region.

President also said that Iran should compensate for the deaths of people in Lebanon, Syria, Yemen and Gaza. In addition, he demanded that compensation be paid to the families of the 17 U.S. sailors killed in the attack on the “USS Cole” in Yemen in 2000. Responsibility for the attack was attributed to the terrorist organization al Qaeda, rather than Iran.

He separately claimed that Iran had allegedly killed around 52,000 protesters.

Meanwhile, Iran has reported progress in talks with Oman on establishing new shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said the two sides had agreed on a route map, although several technical issues remain unresolved.

Tehran is calling for an end to sanctions and military threats, as well as compensation. The United States, meanwhile, has opposed any move by Iran to impose fees on vessels transiting the strait.
