WASHINGTON, August 20. /Dunyo IA/. U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed that he plans to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un by the end of 2026 and resume talks on Pyongyang’s nuclear program, reports Dunyo IA correspondent, citing Fox News.
Asked by reporters about a possible meeting, the president answered in the affirmative. He said that he had eventually received a response from Kim Jong Un after efforts to re-establish contact. According to “The Wall Street Journal,” the U.S. president has instructed his aides to arrange an in-person meeting as early as this fall.
The president’s statement came after he ordered a reduction in joint U.S.-South Korean military exercises. Donald Trump described them as sending a “totally inappropriate and hostile” signal to Pyongyang.
He also said that North Korea has 57 “very powerful” nuclear warheads. The United States does not publicly release an official estimate of North Korea’s nuclear arsenal. Experts estimate that the country has around 50–60 warheads. South Korea has cited a higher number.
Seoul has also expressed readiness to resume talks with Pyongyang aimed at formally ending the Korean War, which ceased in 1953 following the signing of an armistice, but was never formally concluded with a peace treaty.
Meanwhile, Kim Jong Un’s sister, Kim Yo Jong, said she was unaware of any recent contacts between Donald Trump and her brother. At the same time, she described the relationship between the two leaders as “truly great.”
Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un held several meetings in 2018 and 2019, but the talks broke down over disagreements regarding North Korea’s nuclear disarmament. During his second term, Donald Trump has also sought to revive diplomatic contacts with Pyongyang.
