Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan agree on irrigation water supply schedules

ASTANA, May 12. /Dunyo IA/. Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan have approved irrigation water supply schedules for the beginning of the summer season, reports Dunyo IA correspondent, citing with reference to the Kazakh portal “Zakon.kz”.

Following negotiations in Tashkent between the heads of water and energy departments of the countries, a trilateral protocol was signed. The document specifies the agreed volumes and schedules for water releases from the Toktogul Reservoir for the next two months. Representatives from relevant ministries of the three nations, including the ministries of energy and water resources, participated in the event.

The parties emphasized that ensuring sufficient water volumes for southern regions during the growing season was a key issue. According to their assessment, the signing of the protocol ensures stable water supply at the start of the irrigation season and reduces risks for farmers in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.

It is also reported that the next meeting of the department heads will take place in mid-June in Bishkek, where they plan to agree on the schedules and volumes of water supply for July-September.

It is noted that the agreement was preceded by inter-seasonal coordination, within which Kazakhstan supplied electricity to Kyrgyzstan, allowing for the preservation of the Toktogul Reservoir's water resources for agricultural needs.
