Majority of Kazakh citizens back draft of New Constitution In the referendum held on March 15

ASTANA, March 16. /Dunyo IA/. On the evening of March 15, voting in the republican referendum on the draft of the country's new Constitution concluded in Kazakhstan. According to various exit polls, the majority of citizens supported the adoption of the basic law, reports Dunyo IA correspondent, citing with reference to the “Kazinform” international news agency.
According to the Institute for Eurasian Integration, approximately 30,000 people participated in the survey at 200 polling stations across the country. According to the exit poll results, the turnout was 75.3%, with 86.7% of those surveyed voting in favor of the draft new Constitution.
The Institute for Comprehensive Social Research – Astana “Socis-A” also presented its results. According to the organization, 87.4% of citizens who participated in the survey supported the new basic law. The turnout at the polling stations, according to their assessment, was 73.8%.
Institute of Public Policy reported that more than 400 interviewers and supervisors were involved in conducting the survey. 24,000 citizens participated in the exit poll at 200 polling stations. According to the study's results, the turnout for the referendum was 72.1% and 88.6% of the survey participants voted in favor of adopting the new Constitution.
The highest turnout was recorded in the Kyzylorda region at 93.04%, while the lowest voter activity was noted in Almaty at 33.43%. In the country's capital, Astana, the turnout reached 60.36%.
The draft of the new Constitution was developed at the initiative of Kazakhstan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. The document provides for several changes in the public administration system. Specifically, it proposes to abolish the bicameral parliament and replace it with a unicameral body - the Kurultai.
It is also intended to grant the President the right to unilaterally appoint the Prosecutor General, the Chairpersons of the Constitutional and Supreme Courts, the National Bank, and the Head of the National Security Committee.
Furthermore, there are plans to introduce the position of Vice President, whom the President will appoint with the consent of the unicameral parliament. At the same time, the Head of State will have the power to dissolve the Kurultai if this legislative body fails to approve the proposed candidates for the positions of Vice President, Prime Minister and Speaker of Parliament twice.
