Uzbek Suzani Embroidery Exhibition opens in the heart of Berlin

The Embassies of Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan in Germany have jointly organized the exhibition “Uyqash Olamlar” at the “QGallerie” Exhibition Center, dedicated to showcasing the rich heritage of Uzbek Suzani and Azerbaijani Kelagai embroidery, reports Dunyo IA correspondent.
Representatives of the Uzbek and Azerbaijani diplomatic missions, members of the diplomatic club “Willkommen in Berlin” students of Humboldt University studying Uzbek language and culture, members of the public, art enthusiasts, and members of the diaspora attended the opening ceremony of the exhibition.
Representatives of the Embassy highlighted Uzbekistan’s ongoing efforts to develop national handicrafts, preserve and pass down timeless traditional arts to younger generations, and expand the country’s growing tourism potential. They also extended an invitation to guests to visit Uzbekistan and explore the vibrant world of Uzbek suzani embroidery.
The event program featured a lecture on the history and cultural significance of suzani in Uzbekistan’s national heritage, accompanied by performances of traditional Uzbek dances. The exhibition showcased suzani from various regions and embroidery schools across the country.
A film highlighting the Uzbek embroidery tradition allowed participants to observe the skill, master-apprentice relationships, and opportunities for developing craftsmanship in Uzbekistan’s historic cities.
To experience the art firsthand, workshops were organized where attendees could personally embroider elements of suzani, gaining insight into the techniques and traditions of this national craft.
Alongside Uzbekistan’s suzani, the exhibition featured Azerbaijani national silk scarves, offering visitors a unique insight into the artisanal traditions of countries along the historic Silk Road, preserved and passed down through generations.
The exhibition will remain open until 9 January and is promoted as a premier New Year gift for the German public. As part of the event, an online roundtable with Uzbek artisans will be organized, providing German art enthusiasts an opportunity to engage directly with the masters behind these intricate crafts.

The concept of presenting Uzbek and Azerbaijani cultures together through a display that harmoniously combines the unique Uzbek suzani, regarded as works of art, and Azerbaijani silk scarves is particularly remarkable, - remarked Monika Wilde and Khuriya Vaikh, members of the diplomatic club “Willkommen in Berlin”. - The film screening offered fascinating insights into the process of creating and embroidering suzani, revealing the intricacies and secrets of this craft. The accompanying music and dance performances added an even richer dimension, highlighting the vibrant cultures of both nations. It is wonderful that Uzbek suzani are showcased here in Berlin, a city where the cultures of the world converge. The large attendance reflects the public’s keen interest in this art form.
