“Okaz” Newspaper: Uzbekistan develops the silk industry as a high-potential sector of the economy

RIYADH, June 23. /Dunyo IA/.  Uzbekistan successfully preserves and advances its rich sericulture traditions, seamlessly integrating this ancient craft with modern economic opportunities, reports Dunyo IA correspondent, citing with reference to the Saudi newspaper Okaz”.

It is noted that across Samarkand, Bukhara and Tashkent, silk production remains a core element of the national cultural heritage. The intricate process of silk manufacturing begins with the meticulously managed cultivation of silkworms, sustained by local mulberry plantations.

This is followed by the harvesting of cocoons, reeling of silk threads, washing, dyeing, and weaving, culminating in the creation of exquisite fabrics, carpets and handcrafted masterpieces. A single cocoon can yield a continuous filament exceeding one kilometre in length. The utilization of organic, natural dyes preserves the authentic, traditional essence of the manufacturing process.

The newspaper underscores that Samarkand, historically a paramount hub for trade and cultural exchange, continues to stand today as an enduring symbol of the region's masterful artisanal traditions.

The silk industry is firmly positioned as a highly promising and strategic driver of Uzbekistan's national economy. Reflecting this strong upward trajectory, raw silk production reached approximately 26,000 tons in 2024. State continues to extend comprehensive institutional support to the sector, focus-driven on expanding the raw material base and modernizing industrial manufacturing processes.

Sericulture is increasingly integrating into the national tourism ecosystem, offering international visitors a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the comprehensive, authentic end-to-end cycle of traditional silk production.

Against the backdrop of expanding international cooperation, the silk industry and traditional crafts are recognized as high-potential avenues for strategic foreign investments, spanning modern manufacturing facilities, high-value export ventures and sustainable eco-tourism projects.
