KABUL, July 21. /Dunyo IA/.  At least 20 people were killed in Afghanistan as a result of heavy rains that struck on July 20^th and caused large-scale flooding, reports Dunyo IA correspondent, citing with the reference to the “BBC”.

According to the government, more than 100 people remain missing. The city of Parun, administrative center of Nuristan province, was the most severely affected by the disaster. The city's mayor is also among those missing. In addition, over 80 people sustained injuries.

Government officials stated that the natural disaster could result in significant casualties and severe material damage. Footage of destroyed residential houses, shops and administrative buildings is circulating on social media.

Afghanistan is among the countries most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and extreme natural phenomena, including floods, storms and droughts.

According to weather forecasts, the threat of heavy rains and further flooding persists. Meteorological Department under the Taliban government has warned that intensive precipitation and new floods are expected in 10 out of the country's 34 provinces until July 22. Authorities have urged residents to stay away from riverbanks and avoid areas at high risk of flooding.

As a reminder, in April of this year, heavy rains and subsequent floods in northern Afghanistan claimed the lives of at least 150 people. Concurrently, the World Food Programme reported that the death toll had exceeded 300.
