BRUSSELS, July 8. /Dunyo IA/. The European Parliament has approved new rules to strengthen air passenger protections, expanding travelers’ rights and introducing additional obligations for airlines, reports Dunyo IA correspondent, citing DW.
Under the new regulations, passengers traveling with children will be able to reserve adjacent seats free of charge. The same right will apply to people accompanying passengers with reduced mobility.
Airlines will also be required to display the full ticket price, including hand luggage fees, while corrections to passenger names will be provided free of charge.
If a flight is delayed by more than three hours due to the airline’s fault, passengers will remain entitled to compensation ranging from 250 to 600 euros, depending on the flight distance. Claims can be submitted within nine months, and airlines will have 30 days to respond.
Carriers will not be held responsible for delays caused by weather conditions, natural disasters, disruptive passenger behavior, or airport staff strikes.
Passengers will also have the right to arrange an alternative trip themselves if an airline does not offer a new route within three hours. In such cases, expenses may be reimbursed up to 400% of the original ticket price.
After the rules enter into force, airlines will have 12 months to prepare. The new regulations are expected to fully take effect in summer 2027.
