NEW YORK, August 14. /Dunyo IA/.   The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) has published a special article dedicated to the adoption, at the initiative of Uzbekistan, of the United Nations General Assembly resolution entitled “UN General Assembly advances resolution to strengthen the role of parliaments in accelerating social development”, reports Dunyo IA correspondent.

The article, titled “UN General Assembly Advances Resolution to Strengthen the Role of Parliaments in Accelerating Social Development” underscores the essential role of national parliaments in advancing social development, promoting social justice and accelerating the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

It notes that strengthening cooperation among parliaments, governments and the United Nations through the Uzbekistan-initiated resolution will contribute to reinforcing democratic governance, translating global social development commitments into concrete measures at the national level, and advancing collective efforts to build more inclusive, resilient and equitable societies for present and future generations.

Resolution calls for greater parliamentary engagement in the development and implementation of national strategies to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), strengthen transparency and accountability, and ensure that social development policies respond to the needs of all people, leaving no one behind.

Recognizing the importance of inclusive governance, the resolution underscores the need for the full, equal and meaningful participation of women in parliaments, including in leadership positions, and encourages greater engagement of young people in parliamentary processes related to sustainable development. The document also acknowledges the transformative potential of digital technologies and artificial intelligence, while stressing the importance of bridging digital divides and ensuring that technological advances contribute to social development in an inclusive, safe and equitable manner.

By strengthening cooperation among parliaments, governments and the United Nations, the Uzbekistan-initiated resolution seeks to reinforce democratic governance, translate global social development commitments into concrete measures at the national level - national legislation, parliamentary oversight and accountability mechanisms - and advance collective efforts to build more inclusive, resilient and equitable societies for present and future generations.
