Spain enhances institutional ties with Uzbekistan within Asia-Pacific Strategy framework

BARCELONA, February 23. /Dunyo IA/.  With the participation of heads of diplomatic missions from Asian and Oceanian countries, as well as the Ambassadors of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, a presentation was held on Spain’s Strategy for the Asia-Pacific Region for 2026–2029, reports Dunyo IA correspondent.

The document was presented by José Manuel Albares Bueno, Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation of the Kingdom of Spain. Addressing the participants, the Foreign Minister noted that the Strategy, approved by the Council of Ministers on 9 December 2025, serves as a program document and a “roadmap” defining Spain’s priorities in its engagement with the Asia-Pacific region.

Key priorities outlined in the Strategy include deepening political dialogue and expanding trade and economic relations, increasing Spain’s diplomatic presence in the region, promoting new economic agreements and sustainable formats of cooperation, as well as developing partnerships in science, innovation, education, culture and public diplomacy.

In his remarks, Minister Albares emphasized that Uzbekistan has established itself as a priority partner for Spain in Central Asia, particularly in light of the country’s ambitious program of economic reforms and policy of international openness.

It was noted that in recent years, bilateral cooperation has intensified significantly. Spain has demonstrated growing interest in supporting Uzbekistan’s economic modernization processes and promoting Spanish companies in strategic sectors of the Uzbek economy.

It was emphasized that Uzbekistan is demonstrating sustained economic growth, driven by economic liberalization, the attraction of foreign investment and diversification of production.

Within the framework of cooperation with the European Union, Republic is regarded as a key partner in advancing Eurasian connectivity and developing transport corridors under the “Global Gateway” initiative.

At the institutional level, political and economic contacts have been increasingly active, with business forums and official visits taking place. The need to further strengthen dialogue mechanisms and facilitate the participation of the Spanish private sector in projects within Uzbekistan was also highlighted.

The presentation illustrated Spain’s commitment to systematically and long-term strengthening of its position in the Asia-Pacific region, as well as its intention to give relations with countries in the region, including Uzbekistan, a more institutionalized and strategic character.
