LONDON, June 22. /Dunyo IA/. Keir Starmer has announced that he will step down as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and leader of the Labour Party, reports Dunyo IA correspondent, citing the BBC.
Speaking outside 10 Downing Street, Keir Starmer said he would remain in office until the Labour Party completes the process of electing a new leader. He said he had already asked the party’s National Executive Committee to open nominations for the leadership on July 9. According to him, the process should be completed by the start of Parliament’s summer recess on July 16.
He added that if a leadership contest takes place, a new leader will be elected before Parliament returns from its summer break on September 1. Keir Starmer also said he had already spoken with the King and confirmed that the transfer of power would be organized to ensure that the new leader is ready to begin work in the autumn.
In his address, the prime minister said he had “heard the answer” from Labour lawmakers regarding whether he was the right person to lead the party into the next general election and that he accepted that answer “with good grace.”
Keir Starmer also described moving into 10 Downing Street as the “proudest moment” of his life and said he had inherited a Labour Party that was “politically, financially and morally bankrupt.”
