NEW YORK, August 12. /Dunyo IA/. The situation in the occupied West Bank has reached a “breaking point” due to rising violence, the expansion of Israeli settlements and the deepening financial crisis of the Palestinian Authority, reports Dunyo IA correspondent, citing “UN News.”

Ramiz Alakbarov, Deputy Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, made the remarks at a UN Security Council meeting.

According to him, these developments are weakening the Palestinian Authority and undermining prospects for the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state.

Since the beginning of 2026, 76 Palestinians, including 18 children, have been killed in the West Bank as a result of actions by Israeli forces and settlers. Three Israelis have also been killed in clashes.

Since January 2023, 127 Palestinian communities have experienced full or partial displacement, with 47 completely displaced. In 2026, about 3,800 Palestinians have been displaced due to settler violence, demolitions and evictions, nearly half of them children.

More than 1,400 incidents involving settler violence have been recorded in 2026, affecting around 260 Palestinian communities. According to Ramiz Alakbarov, many of the attacks took place in the presence of Israeli forces.

Since the beginning of the year, plans for around 12,360 housing units have been approved or advanced, including 5,160 in East Jerusalem. In July, the Israeli government announced the allocation of $431 million for the establishment of 34 new settlements.

The UN deputy special coordinator said these actions contribute to the de facto annexation of the West Bank and called on the international community to act without delay to preserve prospects for a two-state solution.

The Palestinian Authority is also facing a financial crisis. Ramiz Alakbarov said Israel is withholding around $6 billion in revenues, making it difficult to pay salaries and provide basic services. An additional threat is the possible suspension by Israeli banks of shekel transactions starting September 1.

At the same time, Israel’s Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon said the discussion failed to take into account the rise in “Palestinian terrorist attacks.” According to him, 348 such attacks were recorded in May, compared with 325 in April, while another 408 attacks were prevented.

“This is the bias we are confronting today,” he said, accusing the Security Council of focusing “on one side of the violence while ignoring the other.”

He also pointed to increased Israeli enforcement against “Jewish extremism.” During the first quarter of 2026, Israeli authorities opened 354 investigations and arrested 35 extremists, while 116 such incidents were recorded in June, down from 165 in March.

Danny Danon also warned of an increasing flow of Iranian weapons, funding and training to the West Bank, as well as Hamas efforts to establish new terrorist infrastructure.

UNICEF Deputy Executive Director Hannan Suleiman said that from January 2024 through July 2026, the UN had verified the deaths of 174 Palestinian children in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem. More than 1,500 children were injured.

During the same period, three Israeli children were killed and another 15 injured. In addition, 355 Palestinian children from the West Bank are currently held in Israeli military detention, the highest figure in eight years.

Hannan Suleiman called for the protection of children, an end to the forced displacement of Palestinian families, access to education and healthcare, and protection of humanitarian operations.
