Report in “El Español” highlights Samarkand’s history across the centuries

MADRID, January 26. /Dunyo IA/. Spain’s leading digital newspaper, “El Español”, has published a report by one of its journalists who visited Samarkand as part of a press tour organized in October 2025 by the Embassy of Uzbekistan in Madrid in partnership with “Uzbekistan Airways”, reports Dunyo IA correspondent.

The article highlights that Samarkand, often called the “Pearl of the Islamic World” and the capital of the Timurid Empire, captivates visitors with its rich history, stunning architecture and vibrant culture. Europeans first learned of the city in the 15th century, thanks to the Spanish diplomat Ruy González de Clavijo, who described it as a blue-green paradise, brimming with wealth, exoticism and rare treasures. His accounts have preserved Samarkand’s image as a city of wonders and trade riches along the Silk Road.

The city’s main attractions include Registan Square, home to the Ulugh Beg, Sher-Dor and Tillya-Kori madrasahs - masterpieces of mosaic artistry and enduring symbols of cultural heritage; the Shahi-Zinda complex with its majestic mausoleums; the Bibi-Khanym Mosque, built in honor of Amir Timur’s wife; and the Gur-Emir Mausoleum, the final resting place of the great conqueror himself. Equally captivating is the Siab Bazaar, where ancient crafts, traditional trade practices, and the city’s famed Samarkand bread continue to thrive.

“Samarkand is not only a city of history but also a living city, where the past coexists harmoniously with the present”, - article describes. “A walk through its streets allows visitors to feel the grandeur of Timur’s empire, the spirit of the Silk Road and the region’s cultural richness”.

The article notes that Samarkand is accessible via a direct “Uzbekistan Airways” flight from Madrid or the “Talgo” train from Tashkent, making the city reachable for tourists from around the world.

“Today, Samarkand remains a place where history and legend blend with vibrant culture, stunning architecture, and rich gastronomy, preserving the magic of the great Timur and the enchanting charm of the ancient East”, - newspaper concludes.
