ASTANA, August 31. /Dunyo IA/. President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev today signed a number of personnel decisions following the formation of the new composition of state bodies in accordance with the new Constitution, reports Dunyo IA correspondent citing Kazinform.

In particular, 50-year-old First Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration Erlan Karin was appointed Vice President of Kazakhstan after the Kurultai approved his candidacy. The position of Vice President was introduced by Kazakhstan’s new Constitution, which entered into force on July 1, 2026.

Under the new Constitution, the vice president is appointed by the president with the consent of the Kurultai, expressed by a majority of the total number of its deputies. The vice president represents the president in interactions with the Kurultai, the government and other state bodies. In the event of the president’s early removal from office or death, the powers of the head of state are transferred to the vice president until elections are held.

Forty-five-year-old Olzhas Bektenov retained his post as Prime Minister. Before his reappointment, the president met with the leaders of political party factions in the Kurultai and said that consultations on his candidacy were required in accordance with the new Constitution.

It is worth recalling that the new Constitution was adopted in a nationwide referendum on March 15 this year. One of its key changes was the abolition of the Senate and the transition to a unicameral Kurultai. Elections to the Kurultai were held on August 23, while on August 28, Adilet party leader Aibek Dadebai was elected Speaker of the first session.
