• 250NEW YORK, July 2. /Dunyo IA/. On the sidelines of the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Week, the delegation of Uzbekistan, led by First Deputy Chairman of the State Security Service Botir Tursunov, met with Acting Under-Secretary-General for Counter-Terrorism, Alexander Zuev, reports Dunyo IA correspondent.
The parties highly commended the positive momentum of bilateral cooperation and the successful implementation of joint programmers aimed at strengthening the professional capacity of law enforcement personnel, countering the exploitation of emerging technologies by terrorists, and preventing the financing of terrorism.
Particular attention was devoted to the proposed establishment of an International Centre of Competence for the Rehabilitation and Reintegration of Individuals Repatriated from Conflict Zones — an initiative put forward by President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev during the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2025.
It was noted that, drawing upon Central Asia's successful experience, the Centre could evolve into a global knowledge platform for the development of adaptive rehabilitation strategies. The Centre is expected to focus on training and capacity-building for specialized professionals, developing educational and vocational pathways for repatriated individuals, and advancing measures aimed at preventing and pre-empting violent extremism.
During the meeting, the parties signed a new roadmap for cooperation between Uzbekistan and the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) for 2026–2027. The document marks the beginning of a new phase of the strategic partnership and will provide Uzbekistan with comprehensive expert and technical assistance in strengthening its counter-terrorism efforts.
In New York, the Uzbek delegation also held talks with Natalia Gherman, Executive Director of the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED), to discuss joint security initiatives.
In particular, the parties explored the prospects for the Institute for Strategic and Regional Studies (ISRS) under the President of Uzbekistan joining the CTED Global Research Network. It was emphasized that this would provide full access to the research and analytical output of the world's leading think tanks specializing in counter-terrorism.
At the conclusion of the meetings, the parties reaffirmed the importance of maintaining close cooperation in countering the terrorist threat.
The United Nations Counter-Terrorism Week is one of the world's leading international platforms, bringing together Member States, entities of the United Nations system, international and regional organizations, as well as the expert community to discuss emerging challenges and develop practical measures for implementing the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy. The United Nations Counter-Terrorism Week is being held from 26 June to 2 July.
