Uzbek citizens meet with Diplomats during visit to Maltepe correctional facility in Türkiye

MALTEPE, March 11. /Dunyo IA/. Diplomats from the Consulate General of Uzbekistan in Istanbul conducted another consular visit to a high-security correctional facility in Maltepe of Türkiye, reports Dunyo IA correspondent.

During the visit, consular discussions were held with 63 Uzbek citizens incarcerated for crimes committed in Türkiye. Diplomats reviewed the conditions of their detention and provided necessary assistance.

The visit included an assessment of living conditions, provision of meals, access to medical care and the ability to maintain telephone contact with close relatives. Individual meetings were also held with citizens detained for various criminal charges or sentences, including suspected murderers; individuals involved in blogging and accused of illegal trade in controlled pharmaceuticals causing harm to others; persons accused of financing terrorist organizations and those convicted of robbery, drug trafficking, intentional bodily harm, fraud and other crimes.

Regular visits like these help monitor the welfare of citizens and ensure their rights are respected. They also positively influence the correctional facility administration’s treatment of Uzbek nationals.

During the meetings, issues of concern raised by the detainees were identified and legal explanations regarding their rights, freedoms and obligations under Turkish law were provided.

Following the visit, Consulate General outlined practical measures to assist in addressing the identified issues in accordance with established procedures.
