Azerbaijan strengthens renewable energy capacity with launch of the Caucasus’ largest wind power facility

BAKU, January 13. /Dunyo IA/. The capital of Azerbaijan hosted the official inauguration of the 240 MW “Khizi-Absheron” wind power plant, built by the Saudi company “ACWA Power” with the participation of China’s “PowerChina”, reports Dunyo IA correspondent.
According to the Azerbaijani State News Agency “AZERTAC”, the official launch ceremony featured a speech by Ilham Aliyev, President of Azerbaijan, who emphasized that the development of renewable energy sources is a key priority of national policy and a vital component of the country’s energy system modernization.
Saudi Arabia’s Assistant Minister of Energy for Electricity Affairs, Nasser Hadi Al-Qahtani and China’s Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Lu Mei, highlighted in their remarks that the wind power plant is the largest project of its kind in Azerbaijan and the Caucasus region, capable of supplying “green” electricity to more than 300,000 households.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, Ilham Aliyev, President of Azerbaijan and Mohammad Abunayyan, Founder and Chairman of “ACWA Power”, officially commissioned the “Khizi-Absheron” wind power plant.
According to “AZERTAC”, the project involved foreign investments of approximately USD 340 million. The plant is expected to generate around 1 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, which will save some 220 million cubic meters of natural gas and prevent the emission of more than 400,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
