MOSCOW, January 30. /Dunyo IA/. Meteorologists from Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU) have reported that the Russian capital recorded a historic level of precipitation in January 2026, the highest in the past 203 years, reports Dunyo News Agency correspondent reports, citing “Interfax” Information Agency.

According to the MSU Meteorological Observatory, by January 29 Moscow had received nearly 92 mm of precipitation, marking the highest level recorded since 1823. The university noted that January has been unusually snowy and cold.

“The defining feature of this month has been an abnormally high level of precipitation, resulting from the passage of deep and extensive cyclones over the Moscow region with intensified atmospheric fronts”, - the experts noted.

Snow cover in some areas of Moscow reached up to 60 centimeters, causing significant disruptions to transport: suburban trains operated with delays, and roads were congested with multi-kilometer traffic jams.

 Meteorologists also reported that January temperatures were approximately 1.5 degrees Celsius below the climatic norm, which for this month is -6.2°C.

MSU clarified that the absolute record for January precipitation in Moscow remains in 1823, when, according to observations by the Imperial Moscow University, 122 mm of precipitation was recorded.

Experts note, however, that meteorological measurements from that period may not have been entirely accurate. The second-highest recorded level, 88.9 mm, occurred in 2004. Snowfall is expected to continue into February.

Extreme weather conditions in January were also observed in other regions of Russia. Earlier, a state of emergency was declared in Kamchatka Krai due to a heavy snowfall that partially paralyzed the region’s largest city.
