OSLO, August 28. /Dunyo IA/. Norway’s King Harald V has died at the age of 89 after being hospitalized at the National Hospital in Oslo with a rare blood disorder, according to a statement by the Norwegian government, reports Dunyo IA correspondent, citing a statement by the Norwegian government.

Harald V spent 35 years on the throne and was remembered as a popular monarch who helped modernize the royal family and make it more open. He was also the first Norwegian king born in the country since the 14th century.

He was born on February 21, 1937. In 1957, he became Crown Prince and ascended the throne in January 1991 following the death of his father, King Olav V.

The king was known for his close connection with the Norwegian people and his sporting achievements. He represented Norway in sailing at three Olympic Games.

In 1968, Harald married Sonja Haraldsen, the daughter of a businessman. The marriage broke with royal tradition and later contributed to a more modern and open image of the Norwegian monarchy.

In recent years, the king’s health had deteriorated, and he significantly reduced his public engagements from April 2024. On August 17, 2026, Harald was hospitalized, after which his son Haakon temporarily assumed the duties of regent.

Following Harald V’s death, the Norwegian throne will pass to his only son, Haakon. The late king is survived by his wife, Queen Sonja, his daughter Princess Märtha Louise, his son Haakon and six grandchildren.

As an additional note, Uzbekistan and Norway established diplomatic relations on June 10, 1992. On May 15, 2025, Ambassador of Uzbekistan to Norway, with residence in Stockholm, Rakhmatulla Nurimbetov, presented his credentials to King Harald V.
