Khaled El-Enany elected as the Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization

ТASHKENT, October 7. /Dunyo IA/. Egyptian Khaled El-Enany of Egypt has been elected as the Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, reports Dunyo IA correspondent.

During the voting held last evening, Khaled El-Enany secured 55 votes, while the candidate from the Republic of the Congo, Firmin Edouard Matoko, received two votes. As a result, Khaled El-Enany was elected as the new Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
His candidacy was supported by the African Union, the League of Arab States, as well as a number of countries including France, Spain, Turkey, Gabon, Germany, and Brazil.
He will succeed the incumbent Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay of France, and will serve a four-year term from 2025 to 2029.
Born in 1971, Khaled El-Enany has taught for over 30 years at Helwan University in Egypt. He also served as Egypt’s Minister of Tourism and Antiquities from 29 December 2019 to 13 August 2022.
El-Enany will become the first Director-General of UNESCO from the Arab world, and only the second African to assume this position in the Organization’s 80-year history.
