Prominent British magazine recommends Karakalpakstan as a destination for ecological tourism

LONDON, June 22. /Dunyo IA/.  British online magazine “Travel” has featured Karakalpakstan as one of the most promising destinations for eco-conscious travellers, reports Dunyo IA correspondent.

The author of the article, Uzbekistan’s Ambassador for Tourism and Ecology Sophie Ibbotson, notes that while the region stands on the front line of climate change due to the desiccation of the Aral Sea and the formation of the Aralkum Desert, it is simultaneously emerging as an exemplary model for the development of ecotourism and sustainable initiatives.

It highlights that with the support of international organizations, including the UNDP and UNEP, projects are being implemented in Karakalpakstan to conserve biodiversity, restore ecosystems, and develop local community economies. Ecological tourism is viewed as a vital tool for drawing attention to the region's climate challenges and securing funding to address them.

Special attention is paid to tourist routes to the former Aral Sea, jeep tours across the Aralkum, as well as wildlife observation opportunities in areas such as the “Saigachy” Comprehensive Landscape Sanctuary, the Sudochye Lake System, and the Lower Amudarya State Biosphere Reserve.

The article also notes the region's cultural and scientific potential, including the Igor Savitsky Museum of Art and other environmental museums, alongside the development of new projects, such as the future regional climate museum.

According to the publication, tree planting and participation in ecological initiatives, including the “Yashil Makon” (Green Space) project, position Karakalpakstan as an example of a practical response to climate challenges.

“Travel” magazine emphasizes that ecological tourism in the region not only fosters the economic development of affected territories but also raises international awareness about the consequences of the climate crisis, effectively transforming tourists into “ambassadors” for Karakalpakstan on a global level.
