KUALA LUMPUR, February 11. /Dunyo IA/. The Ambassador of Uzbekistan Karomiddin Gadoev met with a Malaysian delegation led by the heads of “Rafahia Holdings Berhad” and “Global Farm Biotech” to discuss the introduction of new technologies in the field of deep processing of agricultural products in Uzbekistan, reports Dunyo IA correspondent.
At a high-profile corporate briefing, CEO of “Rafahia Holdings Berhad”, announced plans to establish a pioneering facility dedicated to the extraction of lycopene from watermelon, marking a potential first for the region.
According to his words, lycopene plays a crucial role in the pharmaceutical sector, demonstrating potential in inhibiting the growth of cancer cells, supporting cardiovascular health and strengthening the immune system. Beyond its medical applications, the compound is widely utilized in the cosmetic industry for skin rejuvenation and protection against ultraviolet radiation, while in the food sector it serves as a natural colouring agent and a functional dietary supplement.
Malaysian authorities have highlighted that the proposed lycopene extraction project from watermelon could represent a regional first in Asia. Currently, global lycopene production predominantly relies on tomato-based processing, positioning this initiative as a potentially groundbreaking venture in sustainable development.
“Rafahia Holdings” has successfully completed laboratory-scale research and development (R&D) for the extraction of lycopene from watermelon, marking a significant milestone in the project’s scientific groundwork.
Company representatives underscored that the planned production facility will operate on a zero-waste model. While lycopene will remain the core output, by-products will be processed into watermelon juices and soft drinks. Remaining materials, including watermelon pulp and seeds, are set to be converted into organic fertilizers for agricultural use, reinforcing the project’s sustainability credentials.
The company’s management has extended an open invitation to local entrepreneurs with sufficient financial and technical capacity to engage in mutually beneficial cooperation in the implementation of the initiative.
Given that the production of high-concentration lycopene requires substantial volumes of raw materials, the project is expected to ensure stable and guaranteed demand for watermelons, providing long-term market security for local farmers and agricultural enterprises.
The implementation of the project is expected to be a significant step in the development of deep processing of agricultural products in Uzbekistan, enabling the production of export-oriented goods with high added value.
