LONDON, August 12. /Dunyo IA/. The latest issue of the British magazine “OCA Magazine” has published an article by Paul Sawyer, Secretary General of the British Kurash Association, dedicated to the development of the Uzbek sport of Kurash and its emergence onto the international sporting arena, reports Dunyo IA correspondent.

Publication notes that sport not only improves people’s physical and mental health, but also develops social skills and the ability to work as part of a team. It also serves as a catalyst for educational advancement.

Ancient Uzbek wrestling sport of Kurash made its international debut in 1998 following Uzbekistan’s independence. By 2012, the International Kurash Association had around 100 member countries, including the UK. The British Kurash Association, formed in 1999, had been participating in international tournaments and organizing events in the UK ever since,” the author noted.

He also highlighted the organization of the World Junior and Cadet Kurash Championships in Bournemouth in 2012. The tournament became not only a major international sporting event, but also a unique educational project for British students.

Article pays particular attention to the role of school students in preparing for and staging the Championships. More than 100 students served as volunteers, language interpreters and event assistants, participated in designing the tournament’s logo and mascot, preparing the opening ceremony, and organising cultural events. Through the Championships, the students had an opportunity to learn about the history, culture and traditions of Uzbekistan.

Publication emphasises that the staging of the Kurash Championships demonstrated the significant educational potential of sport. International competitions can contribute to developing leadership qualities, language and organisational skills, and self-confidence among young people, while also strengthening intercultural dialogue and promoting Uzbek culture in the United Kingdom.
