US and Iran Exchange Strikes After Attack on Vessel in Strait of Hormuz

WASHINGTON–TEHRAN, June 27. /Dunyo IA/. The United States and Iran exchanged military strikes after an attack on a commercial vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, which Washington described as a violation of the ceasefire, reports Dunyo IA correspondent, citing Reuters.

According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), American aircraft struck Iranian missile and drone storage facilities, as well as coastal radar positions.

CENTCOM said the operation was launched in response to the June 25 attack on the Singapore-flagged cargo vessel “Ever Lovely”. The ship was struck by a suicide drone while exiting the Strait of Hormuz along the coast of Oman.

Washington described the attack as “unprovoked aggression” by Iran that violated the previously agreed ceasefire. US officials also stressed that American forces would continue to ensure the safe passage of commercial vessels through the strait.

US President Donald Trump called Iran’s actions a “foolish violation” of the truce. According to him, Tehran launched at least four drones at vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

Asked by reporters how the United States would respond, Donald Trump replied only: “You’ll find out.”

Tehran rejected the accusations. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed that the vessel had used an unauthorized route and described the US strikes as a breach of the existing agreements.

The IRGC said it had retaliated by striking US military positions in the Middle East. It also warned that any further “aggression” would be met with “an even more extensive response.”

Iran maintains that its agreement with the United States grants Tehran the right to oversee navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. According to the IRGC, Washington attempted to violate these commitments through various provocations.

The attack on the “Ever Lovely” was the first assault on a civilian vessel since the United States and Iran signed a framework agreement on June 17 providing for a ceasefire and the reopening of the strategically important waterway.

Shortly before the incident, IRGC officials had stated that safe passage through the strait would only be guaranteed along routes controlled by Iran.

Following the attack, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) suspended preparations for the evacuation of more than 11,000 sailors and hundreds of vessels that had remained stranded in the Gulf since the outbreak of the US-Israel war against Iran.

Meanwhile, US Vice President JD Vance, who has been involved in negotiations with Iranian representatives, warned that Washington would respond to any Iranian violence with violence.

“Iran signed a ceasefire agreement. We have honoured it. If they have disagreements about how the Memorandum of Understanding is being applied, they can pick up the phone. But violence will be met with violence.” he wrote on social media.
