BELGRADE, August 23. /Dunyo IA/. Early parliamentary elections in Serbia will be held in October this year, President Aleksandar Vučić said on broadcaster RTS, reports Dunyo IA correspondent.
According to the president, the vote could take place on October 18 or 25, with the exact date to be announced in the coming days.
The next parliamentary elections were originally scheduled for December 2027. The decision to hold an early vote comes amid ongoing anti-government protests that have continued for more than a year and a half.
The protests began after a canopy collapsed at a railway station in the city of Novi Sad in November 2024, killing 16 people. Demonstrators are demanding early elections and accusing the authorities of corruption and failing to ensure accountability for the incident.
Aleksandar Vučić has previously said he intends to leave the presidency early, but has not announced a date for his resignation.
Under Serbia’s Constitution, the same person cannot serve more than two terms as president. However, analysts say Aleksandar Vučić could seek to become prime minister after the parliamentary elections if his Serbian Progressive Party wins.
