NEW YORK, August 9. /Dunyo IA/. The United Nations General Assembly resolution “Enhancing the role of Parliaments in Accelerating Social Development adopted at the Initiative of Uzbekistan, is receiving high appreciation from the international community, reports Dunyo IA correspondent.

According to Björg Sandkjær, today, achieving the Sustainable Development Goals is directly linked not only to economic growth, but also to strong state institutions, effective governance, and the activities of parliaments that represent the interests of the broader public. From this perspective, the resolution recognizes parliaments as important institutions that effectively translate international commitments into national legislation, government policies, and budgetary priorities.

Another important aspect of the resolution is that it was adopted in alignment with priorities set out in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Doha Political Declaration adopted in 2025. In particular, active participation of parliaments in the practical implementation of such objectives as reducing poverty, ensuring decent work and full employment, and strengthening social integration is of particular importance.

As the expert emphasized, parliaments contribute to strengthening justice, stability and social cohesion by representing the interests of the population, strengthening parliamentary oversight of the activities of state bodies and shaping inclusive public policies. This, in turn, ensures that the interests of all segments of society are taken into account in decisions that are being adopted.

At the same time, this resolution is also of significant importance for the activities of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs. The Department states that it will assist States in implementing the objectives set out in the resolution by providing analytical support, developing evidence-based recommendations, strengthening institutional capacity, and promoting technical cooperation.

Most importantly, true value of this document will be measured not by the political statements contained in it, but by the positive changes that will take place in the lives of people as a result of its implementation. Putting into practice such principles as improving the well-being of the population, ensuring social justice, expanding equality of opportunity and leaving no one behind constitutes the main objective of this resolution.

United Nations representative particularly emphasized that this resolution, adopted at the initiative of Uzbekistan, will not only further strengthen the international standing of our country, but will also bring global cooperation in the areas of parliamentary diplomacy and social development to a new stage.

This is assessed as an important step towards aligning national development goals with international standards and ensuring human dignity and social justice.
