Uzbekistan–Turkmenistan Intergovernmental Commission Discusses Key Water Management Issues

KHIVA, February 3. /“Dunyo” IA/. The fifth session of the Uzbekistan–Turkmenistan Joint Intergovernmental Commission on Water Management was held in Khiva, “Dunyo” IA's correspondent reports.
The Uzbek delegation was headed by Shavkat Ganiyev, Advisor to the President of Uzbekistan on Agricultural Development, while the Turkmen delegation was led by Tangryguly Atakhallyev, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan.
According to the Embassy of Uzbekistan in Ashgabat, the meeting also included heads and representatives of relevant ministries, agencies, and state bodies from both countries responsible for water resources management, irrigation, and environmental protection.
The co-chairs noted the high level of bilateral relations based on principles of good neighbourliness, mutual trust, and equality, emphasizing the parties’ commitment to expanding productive cooperation in the water management sector, as well as in economic, infrastructure, and humanitarian areas.
It was highlighted that sustainable cooperation between Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan in water resources management holds strategic significance for ensuring food security, developing agriculture, and maintaining socio-economic stability in the region.
During the session, participants exchanged views on the implementation of modern technologies for efficient water use, improving monitoring and accounting mechanisms for water resources, and developing human capital in the water management sector. Special attention was given to climate change adaptation and minimizing related risks to sustainable water supply.
The parties reaffirmed their commitment to regular bilateral consultations, sessions of the intergovernmental commission, and joint initiatives, as well as to further strengthening the legal and institutional framework of cooperation.
The session concluded with the signing of the protocol of the fifth meeting of the Uzbekistan–Turkmenistan Joint Intergovernmental Commission on Water Management.
